The attention of the Federation of Nepali Journalists has been drawn to the fact that Bhoj Prasad Phuyal (Shankar), treasurer of the Small Urban Water Supply and Sanitation Consumers Organization in Mahottari, misbehaved and attempted to assault journalist Ajay Kumar Sah for writing a news story.
Sah was treated like this on April 10 on the pretext of a news story related to the organization. The Federation of Nepali Journalists Mahottari branch has stated that Rajkaran Mahatto, a central member of the Federation of Nepali Journalists, who filmed Phuyal abusing the journalist, was also misbehaved.
The branch says that Mahato was also subjected to numerous baseless insults and insulting statements on Facebook Live.
Phuyal's incitement to a mob when a legal solution can be found in case of disagreement over the news is condemnable and a crime against press freedom.
The Federation will investigate this incident and draw the attention of the concerned bodies to take legal action against the culprits.
Similarly, the Federation has drawn attention to the incident in which journalist Kamal Prasai, who was deployed for media work, was attacked and injured.
On April 12, while collecting news about the demolition of the Manohara Sukumbasi settlement in the Kathmandu Valley, Prasai was attacked by an angry group around 7 pm, according to the online news outlet where he works. The memory card of Prasai's camera was also stolen during the attack.
This attack, which took place while fulfilling the constitutional obligation to inform the citizens, is condemnable and anti-press. The Federation demands that the concerned bodies immediately identify those involved in this criminal act and bring them to justice.
