KATHMANDU, March 29: The Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ), the umbrella organization of Nepali journalists, has celebrated its 71st anniversary by organizing various programs. On the occasion of the anniversary, the Federation's center, province, district, institutional branches, and associate organizations organized diverse programs across the country.
A morning procession (Prabhatpheri) was organized from Sinamangal Chowk to the Federation’s central office in Sanchargram, hosted by the FNJ Central Committee and coordinated by the Valley Provincial Committee. After the procession, floral tributes were offered at the Journalists' Memorial Pillar, followed by a corner meeting addressed by the Federation’s officials and former presidents.
Addressing the assembly, FNJ President Nirmala Sharma expressed her gratitude to the seniors who played a role in bringing the Federation to its current state. She stated that the current executive committee is committed to preserving the Federation's legacy. "In recent days, incidents of press freedom violations have been increasing," President Sharma said. "Despite these challenges, the Federation will remain steadfast as the primary institution fighting for the citizens' freedom of expression." She reiterated that the Federation would never waver on the issues of the physical and professional security of journalists.
Dr. Kumar Sharma Acharya, Chairman of Press Council Nepal, expressed the view that the profession becomes dignified only if the journalist is dignified. He stated that the Council would always stand by journalists against all kinds of atrocities and for the protection of press freedom while they perform their professional duties in a dignified manner.
Former FNJ President Kishore Nepal mentioned that there has been some decline in current journalism compared to the past and emphasized that journalists should rise above partisan feelings. "Even if a journalist's personal faith lies with any party, they must present independence and impartiality professionally," he said.
Another former President, Harihar Birahi, said that one should take inspiration from the glorious history of the Federation and become more active in the coming days. He said, "The Federation has experienced many ups and downs in history. Due to the abnormal situation some time ago, a situation had arisen where the democratic constitution itself was in danger. The election has protected the constitution; everyone must be alert to make it meaningful."
At the program, the immediate past Senior Vice President of the Federation, Ramesh Bista, shared his views.
The program saw a significant presence of former FNJ Presidents Taranath Dahal and Dr. Mahendra Bista, as well as the Federation's vice presidents, secretaries, treasurers, and other officials, members, and representatives of stakeholder bodies.
