Journalists arrested and Bruttaly Beaten

Kathmandu, 16 April 06
4 Journalists including Surya Thapa, central committe member, Federation of Nepalese Journalists(FNJ) were arrested from Gausala, Kathmandu on 15th April at 9.30 in the morning..

They were arrtesed from  a peaceful protest rally organised by FNJ against the goverment atack on peaceful demonstrations.
Other arrested journalists are, Fanindra Dahal & Tika Ram Yatri.

Pollice also bruttaly baton charged on participants of the rally and injured at least over one  dozen journalists. The rally began from FNJ office at Media village and as they reached Gaushalla police bruttaly attacked them.

Mahendra Bista, Secretary General, FNJ, Shailendra Basnet, Krishna Humagain and Man Bahadur Neupane  recived severe injury on their head.. Neupane had seven stiches on his head. Former FNJ presidents Hari Har Birahi, Tara Nath Dahal, central committe member of FNJ Binod Pahari, president of Press Union Murari Sharma, Rajendra Aryal, Bharat Pokhrel, Chakra Karki, Purushottam Kattel Tej Prakash Pandit and Kishore Shrestha were also injred.

The police team including  Supretendent of Police(SP), Shyam Bahadur Khadka, Deputy Supretendent of Police(DSP) Sushil Bhandari, and Inspector Ramesh Basnet baton charged on the head of the journalists. They delibreately charged on journalists head causing severe injuries. They beat journalists even after taking them into control.

All injured journalists are being treated at Kathmandu Model Hospital and other health centres in Kathmandu.

Federation of Nepalese Journalists(FNJ) in its press statement, has strongly condemned the arrests and savage attack of the journalists and demanded immidiate release of them.. Federation has demanded imediate action agianst the guilty. It also urged govrment to respect people's constitutionally guarrented rights of freedom of expression, association and peaceful assembly.
